How to Peer Peering Agreement Technical Requirements
Technical Requirements:
The NAP will provide free peering at the DS-1 (T1) level to any Louisville area ISP. This is not a backbone connection to the Internet, but is a connection for routing of traffic between area ISPs. Generally, a participating ISP will have one or more backbone Internet service connections besides the NAP connection for local peering.
You must have a router port available and CSU/DSU to connect with a DS-1 local loop to the NAP. The router will need to support multi-homed connections, that is, more than one Internet connection supporting BGP-4 protocol and using an Autonomous System Number.
Your router must support Border Gateway Protocol 4, BGP-4, routing. Support of a full routing table is not necessary. For example, a Cisco 2501 with two ports is sufficient.
To facilitate BGP-4 routing, you will need an Autonomous System Number (ASN). Since December 1997, ASN's are allocated by the American Registry of Internet Numbers, ARIN. Each ASN costs $500 plus $30/year. Further information and a registration form is available from ARIN at www.arin.net/asnform.html. When you fill out the form you will need to explain your reason for needing an ASN. Describe your existing connections to backbone provider(s) and your proposed Louisville NAP connection. This makes your service multi-homed and therefore needing an ASN.
A DS-1 point-to-point connection between your location and the Louisville-NAP located at 462 South 4th Street in Downtown Louisville, KY, is necessary. This is usually known as a local loop. You are responsible for all costs associated with this loop. The Louisville NAP will provide this loop for a reasonable fee or you may provide the local loop yourself.
